The Snoqualmie Valley Community Network is a special district authorized by Washington State to address population-based health behaviors. Just as there are identified risks and protective factors for heart disease, identified risk and protective factors in the home, schools, community, and peers influence our children's health choices. The Network helps support and coordinate community leadership capacity to promote health through effective strategies to make the Snoqualmie Valley a supportive environment for children and families. Since 1994, the Volunteer Network Board and the Healthy Community Coalition partners have assessed needs, built capacity, facilitated planning, implemented strategies, and monitored outcomes addressing youth substance abuse and youth suicide. In its 7th year of a Drug Free Communities Grant, the Network is "creating a caring community" to influence social norms to reduce substance abuse. The Network facilitates meaningful community dialogue through hosting an annual Key Leaders Summit, a leadership conference, recognizing outstanding volunteers, awarding prevention scholarships, and presenting health outcomes. In addition, the Network staffs the Community Coalition, Network board, Youth Councils and parent education coordination initiatives.
